Enhanced Performance Fiber Unit (EPFU) Air Blown Fiber Cable

Enhanced Performance Fiber Unit (EPFU) Air Blown Fiber Cable

EPFU is an ultra-lightweight, high-performance air blown fiber cable designed for fast, flexible deployment in microduct networks, offering excellent blowing performance and mechanical reliability.

The Enhanced Performance Fiber Unit (EPFU) is a miniature optical fiber cable developed for air-blown installation into microducts using compressed air. It is ideal for access networks where scalability, speed of deployment, and minimal civil work are essential. With a high strength-to-weight ratio and ultra-low friction jacket, EPFU enables long blowing distances and efficient fiber network expansion.

1. Structure & Design

  • Fiber Type:

    • Available in G.657.A1, G.657.A2, or G.652.D single-mode fibers

    • Typical core counts: 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 cores

  • Buffer Layer:

    • Each fiber is protected with tight or dry loose buffer to resist micro-bending and maintain optical performance

  • Outer Sheath:

    • Made of ultra-low friction TPU or LSZH material, optimized for blowing performance

    • Highly resistant to abrasion, kinking, and environmental factors

  • Diameter:

    • Ultra-small size, typically 1.2 mm to 2.4 mm, depending on core count

    • Designed for installation into 3 mm to 5 mm inner diameter microducts

  • Color Coding:

    • Complies with IEC 60304 or customer-specific coding

  • Weight:

    • Extremely lightweight, typically <10 kg/km

2. Applications

  • FTTH (Fiber to the Home)

  • FTTB / FTTO (Building or Office)

  • 5G small cell backhaul

  • Data center interconnect

  • Access and campus networks using microduct infrastructure

  • Greenfield or brownfield urban deployments

3. Advantages

  • Blowing distance up to 1000 meters or more in a single shot

  • Quick and cost-effective installation without trenching or heavy equipment

  • Easily scalable: new fibers can be blown in later as needed

  • Ultra-low friction sheath enhances blowing performance even in curved ducts

  • Resistant to temperature extremes, moisture, and mechanical stress

  • Ideal for high-density fiber networks with minimal footprint

4. FAQs

  • Q1: What microduct sizes are compatible with EPFU cables?
Typically 3–5 mm inner diameter ducts. We can match cable size to your existing duct system.
  • Q2: Can the cable be blown over long distances?
Yes, depending on duct condition and blower equipment, blowing distances can exceed 1000–1500 meters per shot.
  • Q3: Is this cable suitable for outdoor environments?
Yes. The TPU or LSZH sheath is UV-resistant and can withstand temperature and moisture variations.
  • Q4: Can I use this cable for existing ducts with tight bends?
Yes. EPFU is engineered for high flexibility and can navigate tight bends with low friction loss.
  • Q5: What’s the difference between EPFU and traditional micro cables?
EPFU is smaller, lighter, and optimized for air-blown installation, whereas traditional micro cables are usually pulled and have higher installation force requirements.
